Job Summary—Disability Insurance Medical Director

Similar Job Titles

Medical Review Officer

Physician Consultant

Disability insurance medical directors are tasked with providing direction and medical expertise on both individual member cases and larger projects and company initiatives.

Responsibilities that are medically focused occur during the underwriting process, claim investigation, and other aspects of the disability insurance service lifecycle. Medical directors review and interpret member records, perform risk assessments, assist in projecting medical costs, and apply medical literature to cases.

Medical reviews involve basic clinical data, such as height and weight, medications, and medical history. Some medical conditions require that more detailed data be closely examined. These include musculoskeletal disorders, heart conditions, neurologic conditions, and conditions and complications related to pregnancy. Medical directors may need to consult with external physicians regarding the member’s medical treatment.

From a strategy standpoint, medical directors may develop initiatives focused on functional restoration and return-to-work. They may apply analytical techniques to determine how underwriting processes can be improved.

Example Responsibilities

Review applications, examinations, laboratory and test results, and medical records

Provide medical analysis of claims files and underwriting applications

Consult with and educate legal, underwriting, compliance, and product development staff on clinical topics

Apply medical knowledge to determine functional capacity and impairment

Apply federal and state regulations and company policies to medical assessments

Assess the accuracy of diagnosis, treatment plans, and prognosis through medical record review

Develop policies and processes to evaluate applications and claims from a medical standpoint

Liaise with medical consultants and external physicians
